Reell Stories
Fall 2002

This was the first issue. Reell Precision Manufacturing is a Twin Cities company that makes a variety of clutches and hinges. The company is known for its ethics and values, and I was asked to put together a company “storyletter.”

Co-CEOs Bob Carlson and Steve Wikstrom did not want a newsletter but rather a publication that chronicled the stories that define Reell's corporate culture. The thinking is recounting the challenges, successes, and failures of the co-workers best captures the success of the company.

In this issue, the main story is about a Reell engineer who refused to make a hinge once he learned it would be used in a tobacco company's display ad.

Reell Stories
Spring 2003

Each storyletter always includes profiles of co-workers from all parts of the company. In this issue, a shift leader talks about her determination to brighten up the day with pranks and candy gifts.

A co-worker from Reell's branch in the Netherlands talks about the differences in doing business in Europe versus the United States.

The main story is about how Reell went through a trying time recently when the economic outlook turned sour. The question Reell faced was: layoffs or pay cuts? After much discussion, the decision was everyone, except co-workers earning the least, took a pay cut. The good news is all co-workers kept their job.

Reell Stories
Summer 2003

Reell sets aside 10 percent of pre-tax profits each year for charitable giving. One of the stories in this issue explains why the company gives to charity two to three times what most other companies give.

Another story is a profile of co-worker who misses his homeland, Ethiopia, but is overjoyed with his job and the prospects of a better education and brighter future for his children here in Minnesota.

The main story is how Reell has spun off Vadnais Technologies Corp., which makes high quality springs and tiny coils for medical purposes. Reell could have pushed this start-up effort out of the nest in VTC's infancy, but instead it helped the new company fly through a rough start to success.
